2023 General Assembly of the Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN)
BCPCH-BARMM through Senior History Researcher Esnaera S. Salem attended the 2023 Geneal Assembly of the Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN) at the Capitol University, and New Dawn Hotel, Cagayan deo Oro City, on August 6 to 12, 2023.
The general assembly was structured to promote various discussions and activities aimed at advancing the preservation and advocacy of Philippine history. It also aimed to inspire and encourage local historians to contribute more significantly to documenting the country’s extensive local history. With the participants knowledge-sharing and expertise, the general assembly served as an instrument in identifying gaps in the documentation of Philippine history. Identifying these gaps allows the LHCN to develop mechanisms to fill these gaps and continue to promote accurate, comprehensive, and diverse Philippine history.
With the key theme, “Development and heritage preservation, with a particular focus on historical events and their impact on local communities”, the general assembly showcased various developments in preserving and protecting the country’s heritage, including new conservation technologies, strategies for cultural site management, and community-based cultural heritage tourism models. It also helped highlight the significance of exploring local histories and engaging with local communities in preserving cultural heritage. Participants learned best practices and case studies on how to build meaningful relationships with different historical communities in different regions of the country.
As part of the LHCN general assembly, a special meeting was called for delegates to discuss the 650th commemoration of the Philippine history. The discussion aimed to plan and coordinate activities that would support the commemoration of such crucial event in the Philippine history. It also underscored the importance of promoting diverse and comprehensive Philippine history with LHCN’s fundamental objective.
The general assembly was deemed a success with its activities significantly contributing to the preservation and promotion of Philippine history. With the LHCN and the special meeting discussing the 650th Philippine Muslim History commemoration showcased the LHCN’s commitment to promoting diverse and comprehensive Philippine history. LHCN has continued to advance its objectives, building a legacy for future generations. The success of the general assembly was a testament to ongoing legacy and a promising future for Philippine historical preservation.
LHCN is a network of historians and cultural workers dedicated to promoting and advocating for history. The formation of clusters within the LHCN is essential for each member to have an easier and closer connection with local historians in their geographical vicinity. LHCN clusters were established to facilitate collaborations and partnerships between members and provide them with an avenue to raise concerns and issues to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
BCPCH Lanao del Sur Provincial Staff along with Commissioner Robert M. Alonto also attended the said general Assembly.
