Recognition of Bangsamoro Cultural Artists and Artisans

As part of the launching program of the “Weaving the Bangsamoro Identity” cultural exhibit, taking center stage at the Open Gallery of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) from May 7 to May 31, 2024, the Commission took a momentous step to honor the talent and dedication of the Bangsamoro Cultural Artists and Artisans across the BARMM Region, aiming to spotlight their invaluable contributions in motivating them to preserve and transmit their living traditions to future generations.
 
The recognition represented various artistic categories within the Bangsamoro Region endorsed by the BCPCH Provincial Offices based on the cultural artists and artisans’ expertise in identified artistic categories. Among those recognized were: Basilan Cultural Master Nurayja M. Arabain for Tennun Weaving, Lanao del Sur Cultural Master Saadira Shiek Basmala for Langkit Weaving, Maguindanao Cultural Master Minang S. Gani for Inaul Weaving, Teduray Cultural Master Perlita Laugan, representing Indigenous Peoples for Monom Weaving, Sulu Cultural Master Aida A. Damlail for Saruk Kambigasan Making, Tawi-Tawi Cultural Master Farisha S. Akkeng for Tepo Weaving.

In a special acknowledgment, 2023 Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Awardee Hadja Sakinur-ain M. Delasas was recognized underscoring her artistic excellence and efforts in safeguarding and promoting heritage on the traditional Sama Igal Dance.

BCPCH Executive Director Akmad D. Mama underscored in his closing remarks that the exhibit provided a platform for these cultural workers to resonate, highlighting their unique expressions of creativity and their role in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the BARMM Region.
 
Additionally, the Commission recognizes the invaluable contributions of both its Regional and Provincial staff with a special acknowledgment of the Commissioners, including Commissioners Salem Y. Lingasa, Ph.D. (Maguindanao), Robert M. Alonto (Lanao del Sur), Merfa A. Ampao (Basilan), Elmasia L. Madjilon (Tawi-Tawi), and representatives from Sulu. 
 
The Commission extends an open invitation to everyone to join in the celebration of Bangsamoro heritage and become cultural champions. Everyone is invited to experience the colorful works of the Bangsamoro living cultural masters at the cultural exhibit, which will run from May 7 to May 31, 2024, at the Open Gallery of the National Commissions for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in Intramuros, Manila.
