Cotabato City โ€“ The timeless art of kambayok took center stage during the Bayok Kapamagayon Exhibition Competition held on January 22, 2025, in front of the OCM Main Building. The event celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Bangsamoro people, highlighting history, traditions, and artistry through poetic chanting.

Participants from across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) showcased their talents, bringing life to the narratives of historical origins and the contributions of remarkable individuals to the regionโ€™s culture.

The competition was open to all, regardless of gender, and attracted ten participants from different parts of BARMM, including Normina M. Marandas, Nurjannah Salipada, Saadia A. Kanakan, Sammi A. Kawi, Bainot A. Ibrahim, Reyhana G. Thocks, Nasser A. Adam, Apao M. Bagi, Limbo A. Mamintal, and Raida Daud. Judging criteria for the performances were allocated 40% to Presentation, assessing vocal delivery and manner of speaking; 50% to Content, emphasizing authenticity, organization and composition; and 5% each to Audience Response and Cultural Attire.
The panel of judges featured cultural experts, including Alas M. Panarigan, a renowned bayok champion known as “Pusaka sa Maguindanao;” Dr. Abubacar M. Datumanong, a consultant to the Office of the Chief Minister and the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (BCPCH-BARMM); Bae Intan P. Alamada, a cultural advocate known as “Bae Maliwanag sa Iranun”; and Engineer Marites K. Maguindra, Director II of the MTIT Bureau of Tourism.

BCPCH-BARMM Chairperson Salem Y. Lingasa, Ph.D., opened the program by highlighting the vital role of the kambayok tradition in preserving and conserving cultural identity. He encouraged stakeholders to incorporate this art form into educational and community initiatives to ensure its continuity and growth.

Marites K. Maguindra, Director II of the MTIT Bureau of Tourism, shared an inspiring message emphasizing the importance of cultural promotion, while Bayok Master Alas M. Panarigan provided an enlightening discussion on the Bayok tradition and the purpose of the exhibition competition.ย After the evening of passionate and masterful performances, the winners were announced. ๐‘๐ž๐ฒ๐ก๐š๐ง๐š ๐†. ๐“๐ก๐จ๐œ๐ค๐ฌ emerged as the ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ข๐จ๐ง, followed by ๐๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ ๐€. ๐€๐๐š๐ฆ as the ๐Ÿ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐‘๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐ซ-๐”๐ฉ. ๐‘๐š๐ข๐๐š ๐. ๐ƒ๐š๐ฎ๐ secured the ๐Ÿ๐ง๐ ๐‘๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐ซ-๐”๐ฉย position, while ๐‹๐ข๐ฆ๐›๐จ ๐€. ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ was named the ๐Ÿ‘๐ซ๐ ๐‘๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐ซ-๐”๐ฉ. All other participants were awarded with consolation prizes in recognition of their dedication and effort.

In his closing remarks, BCPCH-BARMM Executive Director Akmad D. Mama commended the participants for their dedication to reviving the kambayok tradition.

Spearheaded by BCPCH-BARMM in partnership with MTIT and the Office of the Senior Minister, the Bayok Kapamagayon Exhibition Competition was a tremendous success as part of the 6th Bangsamoro Founding Anniversary celebration. This event highlighted the richness of Bangsamoro culture while serving as a powerful reminder of the necessity to protect, preserve, and nurture this invaluable tradition for generations to come.
